UNICEF UK statement in response to tragic loss of life in the Channel yesterday

Anna Kettley, Deputy Executive Director of the UK Committee for UNICEF (UNICEF UK), said: “We are deeply saddened to learn that children were amongst those that lost their lives in the Channel today.

“Every child, no matter where they are from, deserves safety, protection and a chance for a better future.

“Too many children are boarding boats in search of a better future, only to lose their lives or go missing on the way. We will continue to see such tragedies while safe and legal routes are unavailable to those seeking safety, to be reunited with family and who want a more hopeful future.

“Despite the risks involved, we know that children, parents and families will do whatever it takes to escape violence, conflict and persecution.

“We urge the UK Government to put the protection of children at the heart of their policies and to ensure there are safe and legal routes to enter the UK.”
