The UK Committee for UNICEF (UNICEF UK)’s Chief Executive, Jon Sparkes said:

“Ukraine’s 7.5 million children need our help, and they need it now. UNICEF continues to call for an immediate ceasefire that would allow for humanitarian help to reach people, the protection of civilians including children, and for vital infrastructure that children depend on to be protected.

“Here in the UK, the outpouring of support and solidarity from across the UK has been incredible, with the whole nation coming together in response to the escalating conflict.

“We welcome the humanitarian funding announced by the UK Government. This will provide a vital lifeline of support and ensure vital supplies such as water and essential health and education supplies can reach those who need them most both in Ukraine and in neighbouring countries.

“We also welcome efforts to support all those leaving Ukraine to reach safety including in the UK. Both the Family Migration Route and the Humanitarian Sponsorship Pathway will provide a safe and legal route for those who have left Ukraine. It is vital that those who are seeking protection in the UK have their visa applications processed as quickly as possible, especially for families with children.

“As the UK Government finalises plans for the Humanitarian Sponsorship Pathway, we urge them to ensure children’s rights and best interests are prioritised, including by providing immediate access to education, health and protection services when children arrive in the UK.

“Children are not responsible for the escalating conflict, but they are paying the highest price. Protecting them and their futures must be at the heart of the response – both in Ukraine and here in the UK.”
