Sudan Emergency Appeal: what is happening in Sudan?
An escalation in armed violence in Sudan is putting children at risk. Children have been killed, injured and displaced from their homes. The conflict is disrupting critical services on which families depend.
At the same time, children and families are experiencing a famine in northern Darfur, a camp hosting 755,000 displaced people.
Over a year and a half of continued conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and Rapid Support Forces has created a humanitarian crisis in Sudan. Half of Sudan’s population – more than 24.8 million people, almost 13.6 million of whom are children, are in need of urgent assistance.
What are children experiencing in Sudan?
- Sudan now has the world’s largest number of internally displaced people, with more than 5 million children displaced internally and across borders.
- Life-saving treatment and other health services are disrupted.
- Most schools are closed, disrupting children’s learning and development
- Cholera continues to spread, with over 18,000 reported cases and 535
deaths across 10 states. - The routine immunisation rate has fallen rapidly since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, meaning one in six children is completely unprotected from preventable diseases.
Help us provide urgent humanitarian aid by donating to our Sudan emergency appeal.
UNICEF’s Support in Sudan
Despite the challenges, we have worked with our partners to provide the following support:
- Rolled out malaria vaccines for the first time in the country to benefit more than 148,000 children under the age of 12 months.
- Reached 8.1 million children and families with safe drinking water.
- Provided malnutrition screening to 4.8 million children.
- Delivered psychosocial counseling, education and protection services to almost 2.5 million children and caregivers.
- Supported 77,700 children, mothers and families with cash, information and other critical services.
There are still millions of children and families who haven’t received any support. With your kind donation, we can help more children and families affected by this conflict. Please make a donation today
How will my donation help children in Sudan?
Our priorities are the safe passage, protection, and access to services for children, families and our staff across Sudan.
A single donation of £25 could help provide emergency supplies like safe water, maternity kits and essential vaccines.
We’re expanding our existing work to support children without parents or guardians and displaced families. We’re securing and mobilising life-saving supplies, and we’re helping treat injuries and getting emergency education services, clean water and mental health support to children.
We are committed to staying to support the children of Sudan for as long as they need us. Please help us to reach children and families affected by this devastating conflict.

For the first 6 months, monthly donations made to this appeal will go towards funding our work to support children in Sudan. After that, donations will go to support our work around the world.
In the unlikely event that the funds raised exceed what’s needed for the Sudan emergency appeal, or if funds cannot viably be directed to this appeal, we will direct funds to support our work to help keep children safe and healthy around the world.
Donating Items and Volunteering
We’re currently not accepting any items for the emergency appeal. These kind offers are really appreciated, but any donated items will need to be sorted, cleaned and transported which could impact our response, so please consider making a monetary donation instead to our emergency appeals.
We’re not currently sending any volunteers to Sudan.
