“I met some incredible children who know so much about their rights, are empowered to use their voices and able to be themselves through the safe spaces and environment at the school. I only wish my time at school had been like this.”
In early 2024, Lee visited George Green’s School, a Gold Accredited UNICEF UK Rights Respecting School in London, where he witnessed firsthand how UNICEF UK works with schools to embed children’s rights in daily life. Lee spoke to the students about feeling different at school, and not being interested in the same things as your peers. He also shared his own journey and spoke to the students about how he was able to grow a career in entertainment.
During his visit, Lee was particularly moved by the students’ deep understanding of their rights and the empowering environment created within the school. “I’ve been a proud supporter of UNICEF UK for a few years now and it’s always so inspiring learning about UNICEF’s work all over the world,” he shared.
Gold level Rights Respecting Schools are schools which have fully embedded children’s rights throughout the school in their policies, practice and ethos. This qualification takes several years to reach. Lee visited a community garden set up by teachers at George Green’s school, where students at the school in central London are able to experience nature and hold responsibilities to ensure the garden thrives.
"(The pupils) walk you through the school and there are posters, there are all these informative pieces where students can see that they can use their voice. And from speaking to all the students today, they are aware of that. They're aware that they have a voice."
