UNICEF UK PAYS TRIBUTE TO LORD PADDY ASHDOWN - FORMER PRESIDENT AND AMBASSADOR

London, 22 December 2018 – Unicef UK pays tribute to its former President and Ambassador, Lord Paddy Ashdown, who has died at the age of 77.
 
Lord Ashdown became a Unicef UK Ambassador in January 2016, after six years as President of Unicef UK.
 
During that time he worked tirelessly to support Unicef’s work and was an incredibly powerful and committed advocate for children’s rights. He saw Unicef programmes first hand all over the world including Ethiopia, South Africa and Liberia.
 
Mike Penrose, Unicef UK Executive Director said: “We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Lord Paddy Ashdown. Paddy was a true humanitarian and advocate for children. The entire Unicef family has lost a great friend. Lord Ashdown supported the organisation for more than eight years in his roles as President and Ambassador. 
“All of us at Unicef UK extend our deepest sympathies to Jane, his children, grandchildren and family – and join his many friends and admirers in paying tribute to his life. He will be deeply missed.”
 
Most recently in 2014, Lord Ashdown visited Bangladesh to see how Unicef programmes were helping to protect children and families from ill-health due to respiratory diseases, and saw a swimming project where children are taught how to get to safety during severe flooding.
 
Speaking of his time as Unicef UK President, Lord Ashdown said: “I am so proud of my involvement with Unicef and with all of you. It is one of the most worthwhile things I have done in my life and I have enjoyed it immensely. Thank you for giving me this opportunity.”
