Why donate to UNICEF?

How your money helps children

Home > Why donate to us?

A donation to UNICEF means you are making a difference in children’s lives

We’re delighted that you’re considering donating to us. From a life-saving vaccine to school books in a rural village classroom, the money you donate today could protect a child from dangers like disease and exploitation, so they can grow up safe and healthy.

We receive no money from the UN budget, so we rely entirely on charitable donations like yours to fund our vital work to protect children, help transform their lives and create a safer world for tomorrow’s children.

Why choose us?

We are the leading organisation working for children.

We ensure more of the world’s children are vaccinated, educated and protected than any other organisation. We’ve done more to influence laws and policies to help protect children than anyone else.

We get things done. And we’re not going to stop until the world is a safe place for all children.

In 2022, we responded to 442 humanitarian crises in 128 countries and territories, thanks to donations like yours

Global reach and expertise

UNICEF works in more than 190 countries and territories and in the world’s toughest places to reach the children and young people in greatest need.

Our skilled staff specialise in areas like health, nutrition and protecting displaced children during conflict and disaster. They work with communities and governments to tackle the root causes of poverty and address children’s immediate needs.

When a humanitarian emergency hits, we are ready to respond. And we have one of the largest supply networks in the world.

This means we can deliver essential supplies like life-saving vaccines, mosquito nets and water purification tablets to help children. We can rapidly dispatch wherever they’re needed by land, sea or air.

I researched charities that were most effective internationally in a crisis, and felt that I would be giving directly to those who need it most.

Innovating for children

Here at UNICEF we’re always striving to find new, more effective ways of protecting and promoting children’s rights.

We develop simple, affordable and innovative solutions to complicated problems.

From portable School-in-a-Box kits to make classes possible almost anywhere, to the Learning Passport, a digital platform designed to provide an accessible online education – when you donate to us, you help us develop solutions that will help make a difference to millions of children’s lives.

How we raise money

UNICEF UK is a registered charity. We raise money for our work around the world from generous gifts from people like you, including donations, legacies, sales of cards and gifts and fundraising.

We also receive money from organisations, including our corporate partners, charitable trusts and foundations and other grant-making bodies. Find out more about our fundraising practices.

How your donation is spent

On average over the last five years, for every pound we spent, 75p went towards our work for children around the world, 24p was spent on raising another pound and 1p was spent on the governance of the charity.
