Last year, more than 15,000 people around the world took the Live Below the Line challenge and lived on just £1 per day for a week. Their action and support helped UNICEF make a real difference to some of the world's poorest children.

By taking part in Live Below the Line, you can start to understand how children like Paulino and Laura live. This is their story.

The children have very few possessions.

Some of their belongings, displayed here on a sleeping mat outside their home, include an umbrella, tools and eating utensils.

To most, washing is a simple task.

For Laura, it means walking over a mile and a half to her nearest water supply - a local river.

Like any household, there is always laundry to be done!

Laura washes her and her brother's clothes at the river bank.

When we're thirsty, most of us can just turn on a tap.

Laura collects water for her family from the river and carries it home. She walks and each round-trip takes her an hour to complete.

UNICEF carries out routine immunisations in vulnerable communities such as Laura and Paulino's, and provides safe water and separate sanitation facilities for girls and boys.

Farming the land can be back-breaking work.

Here, Laura works on neighbour's plot, which is a two-hour walk from her home. In exchange for the work she does, she receives food for her and her brother.

Education is vital to each and every child, giving them the best chance to reach their full potential in life.

Paulino, who is seven years old, attends class; his sister would like to return to school but cannot afford to.

In this picture, Paulino draws his home - a simple hut which he and his sister take care of.

UNICEF helps children like Laura and Paulino by building child-friendly schools. We provide school kits, desks and recreational supplies, training for teachers, hygiene education and life skills training.

Laura smiles and laughs as she plays games with her friends in the community.

UNICEF runs care and protection projects for orphans and other vulnerable children like Laura and Paulino.

Help spread awareness of poverty and take part in Live Below the Line this year.
